Types of Incontinence

Incontinence broadly falls into one of the following categories:

  • Stress incontinence – I leak when I cough, laugh, sneeze, play sport and pick up my baby.
  • Urge incontinence – The urge to empty my bladder can be triggered by things like putting my key in the door or hearing a toilet flush. It doesn’t matter how recently I have been to the toilet – it still seems like I might wet my socks if I don’t get to a toilet now.
  • Urinary frequency – I need to pass urine very frequently during the day or night. I know every toilet around (I might even have bought a guide book to the toilets in my town or have a phone app that locates the nearest toilet)!
  • Mixed incontinence – I have more than one of the above problems to varying degrees.
